As the crisp autumn air settles in Acton, MA, many of us gardeners, nature enthusiasts, and other types of humans eagerly (or apprehensively) await the first frost of the season.

Acton, being located in USDA Hardiness Zone 6a, typically experiences its first frost date sometime in October. Its getting later every year, it seems.

What is a frost date? Accoding the Farmers Almanac it is the first light freeze in fall. Ok. But not all frosts are created equal. What exactly does 'light' freeze mean?

  • Light freeze: 29° to 32°F (-1.7° to 0°C)—tender plants are killed.
  • Moderate freeze: 25° to 28°F (-3.9° to -2.2°C)—widely destructive to most vegetation.
  • Severe freeze: 24°F (-4.4°C) and colder—heavy damage to most garden plants.

Looking at the 10-day forecast on weather.com we might hit our first light freeze on Nov 1.

What do you think? Will Acton see its first frost before or after November 1st? Share your predictions with us!
