Did you know there's a magical river flowing right under Acton’s nose, and it seems like hardly anyone's in on the secret? Picture this: the majestic Assabet River, carving its way through our southern most border, joining hands with the Sudbury River at the whimsical-sounding Egg Rock, and then transforming into the Concord River. But wait, there's more!

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle route 62, you'll stumble upon the Acton Canoe Launch, where you won't find some fancy yellow-blazed trail. Nope. Here, it's just you, nature, and the opportunity to chill your hands in the water. Dive into the tranquil rhythms of rippling water while enjoying the company of passionate fly fishermen, enthusiastic morning coffee gulpers, graceful kayakers, and some very opinionated mallard ducks.

If you do go fishing expect to find Largemouth Bass, Common Carp, Catfish, Perch and Pickerel. The fish diversity owes itself to the many intersecting bodies of water. Catch and release is your best bet. Since our rivers have an infamous history of polution keep up to date with the latest advisories. Ecoreportcard is a great resource for up-to-date info.

For all you history buffs, this spot is where the old gunpowder mills once stood! If you've ever wondered why Acton, Concord, Sudbury, and Maynard have those “Powder Mill Roads,” well, now you know. And if you squint a bit, you might spot the remnants of old buildings and railroads.

In 2004, Acton played the ultimate chess move, securing a conservation easement on this parcel. So, we've got parking (prioritize the spot on the right, but feel free to grace the meadow on the left if things get crowded). Oh, and there's a fantastic fisherman's trail, perfect for those introspective riverside walks. Just remember, after a short stroll downstream, you'll be entering Concord's private lands. Let's be good neighbors and treat it like our public lands, alright?

So, next weekend, why not trade the TV remote for a paddle? Dive into this hidden gem, and who knows? You might just get quacked at by a mallard! 🦆🛶
