Imagine cruising up to your favorite coffee spot, eager for that morning jolt, only to find there's no drive-thru to whisk you on your way. In the bustling age of convenience and quick service, the Town of Acton, MA stands as a unique exception. Thanks to a particular bylaw, drive-up windows are a no-go in this charming locale. But why? What's the story behind this uncommon rule? As you sip your coffee (after parking and walking inside, of course), let's delve into the curious case of Acton's drive-thru dilemma.

Acton, MA, with its picturesque charm and distinct character, has some intriguing bylaws. Dive into the 'ACCESSORY USE Regulations' bylaw, and you'll unearth a peculiar decree: drive-up windows, in most instances, are off-limits. Ever wondered why there's an exception for banks? Section 3.8.2.2 under the 'ACCESSORY USES' permitted in the Office, Business, and Industrial Districts sheds some light—it seems banks, with their vaults of cash, have earned a pass. But what about the caffeine-craving population or those with a hankering for quick bites?

During my deep dive, Christine from town hall proved invaluable. She directed me to an enticing glimmer of hope: the 2021 document titled "Amendment 11: Amend Zoning Bylaw – Drive-up Window Facilities." Could it be? Was a McDonald's drive-thru on the horizon for Acton, MA?

Alas, it was not to be. The motion narrowly missed the mark, failing by a slim margin of Yes 141 to No 145. And this, mind you, was during the peak of Covid—when convenience was more sought-after than ever! If it didn't pass in such times, one wonders if Acton will ever see a change in this stance.

Silver linings? Well, think of it as a nudge towards a bit of exercise! But it does raise questions. Were you part of the voting brigade? Did you swing towards the "Yes" or were you firmly in the "No" camp? What drove your decision? And, is it time for a revisit on the issue? Please let us know in the comments below.

For now, when the craving strikes, and a drive-thru becomes indispensable, I find myself crossing over to Maynard's D&D near Market Basket or the McDonald's in Maynard Center. Ah, Maynard, the land of drive-through bounty!
