Is Acton Sinking?
Hey Actonians (or Actonites?), ever felt like you’re going downhill? Literally? Well, brace yourselves, because according to a study by The National Academy of Sciences of the USA, we might just be on a slow-motion ride to Davy Jones' locker! The study, with a title longer than a CVS receipt - "Slowly but Surely: Exposure of Communities and Infrastructure to Subsidence on the US East Coast" - suggests that a huge chunk of the East Coast, stretching from the land of lobsters (southern New Hampshire) to the world of Walt (Miami), is playing a real-life game of sinking ships.
Boston, along with a dozen other urban VIPs, got a special shoutout as a city where the ground is playing a sneaky game of hide and seek with sea level. And guess what? Acton is in on this game too. So, that sinking feeling you’ve been having? No, it’s not just your Monday morning blues. Acton is actually taking a dip!
With the recent deluge turning our backyards into potential swimming pools, it's only fair to ask: In a century, will Acton be the new beachfront property hotspot? Imagine swapping your snow boots for flip-flops and your snow shovels for surfboards. We might not be there yet, but hey, who knows? Maybe it's time to start practicing our surfing skills and perfecting our beach bods.
So, fellow Actonians (I'm just going with this), let's keep a buoyant spirit. After all, if we're going down, we're going down laughing! Stay tuned to see if our future includes a little more beach and a little less backyard.
Let us know what you think in the comments!
