Beijing Royal School to Open Campus in Maynard
A Global Vision in the Heart of Maynard
An exciting development is on the horizon for Maynard as the internationally renowned Beijing Royal School (BRS) prepares to open a new campus at the former site of Stratus Technologies at 111 Powder Mill Road. According to a press release from Town Administrator Greg Johnson, this project promises to bring a global perspective to local education, fostering a diverse and dynamic learning environment.
Wang Guangfa, chairman and president of BRS, recently met with town officials, including Johnson, Assistant Town Administrator Megan Zammuto, Economic Development Committee Chairman Jack MacKeen, Town Planner Bill Nemser, Building Commissioner Rick Asmann, and Conservation Agent Katie Young. During the meeting on June 18, Wang shared his vision for the new campus and outlined the ambitious plans for its development.
Founded in 1996 and approved by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, Beijing Royal School aims to provide students with an international perspective while maintaining a strong understanding of Chinese culture. The school is affiliated with several prestigious higher learning institutions, including the University of North Carolina, enhancing its reputation for academic excellence.
The Maynard campus will serve students from kindergarten through grade 12, and will also include a daycare for young children. The proposed curriculum is designed to be bilingual, offering general education as well as specialized medical and healthcare training. The school aims to host between 300 to 500 students, with an enrollment strategy that includes one-third local students, one-third international students, and one-third Chinese students. This diverse student body will be supported by local scholarships, emphasizing the school’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
The decision to establish a campus in Maynard was influenced by the town’s proximity to Boston’s rich academic environment. This strategic location allows BRS to leverage existing partnerships with Boston area colleges and universities, as well as tap into the region’s talent pool. The organization plans to renovate the existing 287,000-square-foot building and construct several new structures to accommodate its ambitious educational programs.
Beyond the classroom, BRS aims to integrate with the local community through various initiatives. The school plans to host joint educational conferences, establish a regular shuttle service between Maynard and Boston, and develop working partnerships with local institutions. Additionally, they intend to lease space for research and development and offer cultural programs to the public, fostering a vibrant educational ecosystem.
Tuition for Beijing Royal School in China ranges from approximately $9,000 to more than $25,000 per year, depending on grade and class type. The new campus in Maynard is expected to offer similar high-quality education with competitive tuition rates.
